Harrismith used to be best known as the halfway stop between Joburg and Durban. But now it’s been upgraded to destination status courtesy of the Mazda MTN Dirty Harry mountain bike race, which takes place there on Saturday.
The small-town peace will be shattered by the beeping of hundreds of heart rate monitors as the country’s top riders gather to tackle the Platberg mountain in one of the toughest races on the calendar. With BMX racing making its much-anticipated Olympic debut on Wednesday and still little for Team South Africa to celebrate, pressure is mounting on Sifiso Nhlapo to achieve that medal he’s been tipped as a contender for. But that’s okay because the 21-year-old from Alberton thrives on pressure.

Kevin Evans confirmed his status as the country’s marathon mountain bike racing king when he won his third successive South African title at the Mazda MTN Stellenbosch Challenge at the weekend.
Tipped as the pre-race favourite, Evans wasn’t troubled once by his rivals as he took the lead from the very first climb shortly after the start and used his fitness, strength experience and skills to stay ahead until the finish, where he led a podium clean sweep for his MTN Energade team. |

He’s finished second at all three of the 2008 Mazda MTN National Mountain Bike Marathon Series races this year, but at the fourth, in Stellenbosch on Saturday, Kevin Evans says the only place for the bridesmaid bouquet is under his foot.
The two-time SA marathon champion is aiming to capture his third successive Elite men’s national title and few would bet against him winning it. The only rider in the country that’s been able to really challenge Evans this year is Burry Stander (Mr Price GT) and he’s not racing on Saturday due to his Olympic Games preparation abroad. |
